To effectively mitigate these issues, it is essential to conduct a thorough traffic impact assessment of new developments before they are implemented. One such approach is the TransCAD model, which was successfully used in a recent study by Sharmeen et al. (2020) to assess the traffic impacts of mixed land use projects in Dhaka City. ![]() The TransCAD model is a widely recognized software tool used for estimating origin-destination (OD) matrices and predicting background traffic volumes. In this study, the researchers used the TransCAD model to estimate the OD matrix and predict the background traffic volume before superimposing the traffic volume to obtain the traffic assignment result. This approach allowed them to identify specific problems and propose relevant improvement measures for each intersection within the study area. The researchers' methodology began by determining the basic parameters of the traffic impact assessment, including the study area, road conditions, and traffic flow counts at each intersection. They then conducted a thorough analysis of the data obtained from these surveys to determine the potential effects of new developments on the traffic network in the affected area. The study found that the TransCAD model was effective in assessing the traffic impacts of mixed land use projects in Dhaka City. The researchers were able to identify areas of high traffic congestion and propose targeted improvement measures, such as optimizing intersection designs and improving public transportation systems. The results of this study demonstrate the importance of using advanced modeling techniques like the TransCAD model to inform urban planning decisions. Overall, the TransCAD model offers a powerful tool for assessing the potential impacts of new developments on local traffic networks. By applying this methodology in Dhaka City and other rapidly growing urban areas, policymakers can make informed decisions about infrastructure investments and transportation planning initiatives that prioritize the safety and efficiency of all road users.
